The kids are having a blast this winter sledding in the front yard

Want to go sledding but can't get to a sledding hill?
Then build your own!

We have a great big sledding hill that isn't too far from home but with a busy family schedule we don't always make it there as often as we like. The kids would go every single day if they could, just not realistic though. Every year we normally gather all the snow we shovel off the driveway at the bottom of the tree you can see at the end of the yard. The kids use the pile of slow to sled on. But it's always a short hill and not all that thrilling. This year, and I can't believe we never thought of it before, we made a big pile of snow just in front of our front porch. This created a larger hill, plus there is a slight natural decline to our yard that enables them to slide almost all the way to the tree. So much more fun!

To get enough snow to the front porch to make our hill my daughter shoveled snow from the yard onto the sled which I then pulled up to the porch and added to the pile. Back to my daughter for more snow and back to the porch to add it to the pile. Our system was quite effective and soon our pile of snow was big enough. We made the pile on both sides of the porch rail so there was a large enough flat area to sit the sled on and allow the kids to get on easily. A little push from mom and they were flying down the hill, squealing with delight!

At first our hill had a curve to it as you can see in the video. But we couldn't get it quite right. The kids just kept flipping over. Still fun, but we thought we'd try something new. We got rid of the curve and added a bump. By the time they hit the bump they were going pretty fast and would go airborne for a moment. Cool! For extra speed, we added water to the slide and let it freeze overnight. The kids are having a blast, especially my 10 year old. She stays our for hours until it starts getting dark.

What I love about having our own sledding hill in the front yard is that it gives the kids an opportunity to go outdoors, have lots of fun, and get some exercise. And our big living room window gives us full view of the yard so I can keep an eye on them without having to go outside myself.

So what is your family doing during this winter to stay active? Sledding, ice skating, skiing? I'd love to hear what you're up to. Stay warm and HAVE FUN!

  1. So awesome! We live at the end of a dead end street and our plow guy makes a giant hill right at the end which is in the area we share with our neighbor ... we sled there a lot

  2. Having grown up with good tobogganing hills 'in our backyard' this is a great idea for those who don't have such convenient access to one.
