If you haven't had a chance to take a look at the fantastic books that DK Canada is featuring in their Gift Boutique right now you'll want to check it out right away! You'll save 30% on a selection of wonderful titles. Our family was given the opportunity to review 4 books from the Gift Boutique. When we opened the box I was just about knocked over when I saw the copy of Smithsonian Animal. Just the picture on the front cover is ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! I was also surprised by the shear size of this book with it's 632 pages. My two daughters and I pulled it out right away and started looking though. My 9 year old was in absolute AWE! As she flipped through the pages she said to me "Mom! I think every animal in the whole world is in this book!" I was thinking the same thing too. We are completely and utterly in LOVE with this book I can't even explain it.

As I've mentioned before, our family are animal lovers. If you are an animal lover this is the book to have. First published in 2001 with over 1 million copies sold globally, this copy of Animal is a fully updated and expanded edition of the world's best selling animal encyclopedia. It includes the profiles of 50 new species discovered since Animal was first published. It also features the latest scientific discoveries and developments as well as updated population numbers and the conservation status of many animal groups.

I'm looking forward to using this book for years to come with our homeschooling lessons. The section on habitats alone could take months. We are going to love learning more about life in the oceans, desert, tropical forest and polar regions, as well as 7 others and about the animals that live there. This book divides the animal kingdom into 6 groups, Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish, and Invertebrates, profiling over 2,000 species. The data field for each species includes their Latin name and common name along with information such as size, weight, location, and habitat. The photographs are just amazing. The picture of the Mandrill on page 147 really caught our eye with it's mouth wide open in a warning yawn revealing it's fearsome teeth that can be as long as 2 1/2 inches. So cool! One of the girls favorite animals is the Proboscis monkey with it's huge hanging nose. Personally, the Giant Panda is my absolute favourite. It's sad to see that they are endangered.

There is so much to discover with this book that you really have to see it for yourself to truly appreciate ALL it has to offer. Perfect for families, students and nature lovers alike, I truly recommend adding it to your home library. It's a fantastic reference book that our family will come back to time and time and time again. It's also a great book to keep out on the coffee table when company comes to visit. It will certainly be on mine when my family comes to visit this weekend!
